- Now at its best: Dates
Creamy coconut-date filling coated with dark chocolate. Same tropical taste experience as Bounty, but with natural ingredients.
Replaces: Bounty, Raffaello, coconut-filled chocolate bars loaded with sugar
The feeling of a classic coconut-chocolate bar — crisp outer shell, soft coconut filling melting on the tongue — but built from four recognisable ingredients: unsweetened shredded coconut, Medjool dates, full-fat coconut milk and dark chocolate (70%+). The sugar syrup, palm fat and milk powder of the original are replaced by the natural sweetness of ripe dates, and the coating uses dark rather than milk chocolate.
Why better: Dark chocolate from 70% cacao is, per USDA, a source of magnesium (around 228 mg per 100 g); magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal muscle and nervous-system function, to normal psychological function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (EU 432/2012). Dates supply, per USDA, around 7 g of fibre and around 696 mg of potassium per 100 g; potassium contributes to normal muscle function and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure (EU 432/2012). Unsweetened shredded coconut contains around 16 g of fibre per 100 g and forms the structural, fibre-rich heart of the bite. This remains a calorie- and fat-dense treat: 1-2 bites per day are enough; it is intended as a deliberate dessert, not a daily snack.

Nutritional Synergies
This recipe combines ingredients that enhance each other:
MCTs slow sugar absorption from dates for more stable energy
Technical: Dates contain 66g natural sugars per 100g (GI ~42-55). Desiccated coconut contains 33g fat of which 82% MCTs that slow gastric emptying and dampen glycemic response. Coconut fiber (9g/100g) reinforces this effect.
What does this mean for you? Roll dates in desiccated coconut for an energy snack without sugar spikes. This is why date-coconut balls are such a smart snack.

Magnesium + iron + natural sugars for energy
Technical: Dark chocolate contains magnesium (230mg/100g) and iron (12mg/100g). Dates contain potassium (696mg/100g) and natural sugars providing quick energy. Magnesium from chocolate supports muscle relaxation while dates replenish glycogen.
What does this mean for you? Fill dates with a piece of dark chocolate for an energy snack. Or make chocolate-date truffles - a healthy alternative to candy.

MCTs increase flavanol absorption from dark chocolate
Technical: Dark chocolate contains flavanols (epicatechin, catechin) and theobromine. Coconut oil's MCTs are quickly absorbed and improve absorption of these fat-soluble polyphenols. The combination also gives a smooth texture.
What does this mean for you? Melt dark chocolate with coconut oil for chocolate coating, truffles or energy bites. The bioactive compounds of the chocolate are optimally utilized.

Vanillin enhances chocolate flavor perception
Technical: Vanillin (the main aroma molecule in vanilla) binds to the same olfactory receptors as chocolate aromatics (pyrazines, Maillard compounds). This enhances perceived chocolate flavor without extra sugar or cocoa. Research shows vanillin increases sweetness perception by 10-15%, requiring less sugar.
What does this mean for you? Add vanilla extract to chocolate baking or hot chocolate. You need less sugar because vanilla enhances the chocolate flavor and sweetness.
